Free refrigerators could be installed in up to 1,000 primary schools as part of the Government's revitalised milk scheme.
Flavoured milk, low-fat and fortified options will also be part of an improved programme promoting healthy eating, exercise and diet among children.
The Minister for Agriculture and Food, Mary Coughlan, today launched the new- style initiative which features children's character Milky McDrop.
Recognising that youngsters want a chilled, fresh product, she is offering 1,000 schools participating in the scheme a refrigeration unit free of charge for school milk.
"Milk can provide approximately one-third of a child's recommended daily dairy intake," she said.
"I am encouraging teachers and parents to take full advantage of this enhanced School Milk Scheme for the benefit of our children."
The scheme, which is funded by the EU and National Exchequer, began in 1982 with the full commitment of the Irish dairy industry.
Its aim was to promote and encourage the consumption of milk among schoolchildren.
Despite a decline in recent years, the minister is confident the revitalised programme will see more young pupils drinking milk.
Meanwhile AA Roadwatch has warned drivers to leave home early tomorrow morning as the majority of student's return to school after their summer break and extra traffic is expected on routes throughout the country.
