A PLAN to raise money for charity that was hatched out of pure boredom begins this morning when two friends pile into a 14-year-old Nissan Micra and set off on a three-day journey around the 32 counties of Ireland. They will visit the county town of each one, and photograph the locations.
Workmates Darragh Collins (30) and Darren Kenna (28) came up with the idea during a slow-paced late shift at Intel in Dublin.
“Irish people travel the world a lot. I’ve been to the US, China and all over Europe, but I haven’t seen a lot of Ireland. I said it to Darren and we figured it’d be fun and a good way to raise money for charity,” said Mr Collins.
Planning the trip and learning Ireland has 33 county towns for 32 counties has helped improve their grasp of Irish geography.
“I never knew Lifford was the county town in Donegal or that Belfast isn’t one at all, or that Tipperary has two,” said Mr Collins.
Today’s leg of the journey commences in Naas and ends in Lifford. Tomorrow’s drive will culminate in Cork, and the trip finishes in Dublin on Friday afternoon.
The drive is to raise funds for the Irish Cancer Society and Irish Hospice Foundation.
