The start of the Omega European Masters in Switzerland today was delayed for two hours by overnight frost.
Lee Westwood was among those forced to sit around waiting for conditions to improve on the spectacular Crans-sur-Sierre course 1,500 metres up in the Alps.
Snow fell earlier this week just above the ski resort and yesterday there was rain.
But the temperature was always going to be the bigger problem, and the knock-on effect of the delay was the first round was unlikely to be completed today.
The sun was shining this morning, but much of the course is shaded by trees and that made it impossible to begin any earlier than 9 a.m.
Westwood and Thomas Bjorn are the only two members of Europe's Ryder Cup team in the field.
But it also boasts world number four Ernie Els, Nick Faldo and and another former US Masters champion in American Craig Stadler.
