The price of petrol and diesel fell slightly in the last month, according to AA Ireland.

The motoring lobby group said its latest survey found the average price of a litre of petrol was 118.9 cent, down 0.3 cent, while diesel fel 0.2 cent to an average of 119.6 cent per litre.

Howvever, AA public affairs manager Conor Faugnan warned that oil remained expensive on world markets.

"Were it not for the cushioning effect of a weak US Dollar fuel would be even more costly. As it is, prices are 15 per cent higher than they were 12 months ago."

He added that prices varied considerably from one service station to another.

"We would encourage motorists to get into the habit of noticing prices as they drive around and to give their business where they see the best value."

Motorists can also save money by keeping their cars in good condition and driving smoothly. Aggressive acceleration and braking waste fuel, and car features like climate control can be very thirsty as well, Mr Faughnan added.
