A petition will be handed to the Government over a decision by health service bosses to cap funding for the purchase of incontinence products.

The Irish Nursing Homes Organisation (INHO) is demanding the withdrawal of a Health Service Executive directive on the supply of incontinence products.

A spokeswoman for the INHO, which is the national representative body for private nursing homes, said the directive was in contravention of Department of Health and Children policy.

"INHO members will launch a petition to be forwarded to both the Department of Health and Children and the HSE," the spokeswoman said.

The directive from the HSE in counties Galway, Mayo and Roscommon states it has been decided to cap the monthly allocation towards the purchase of incontinence wear.

The organisation said this follows a cut in support for older people through the capping of the enhanced subvention scheme.

The private nursing home sector provides 17,722 beds, accounting for 63 per cent of all long term care beds in the country, and employs over 18,000 staff.
