A FUNDRAISING event organised by members of the Japanese community in Ireland for those affected by the earthquake takes place in Dublin on Saturday.

Featuring demonstrations and workshops in Japanese music, calligraphy, origami, Tai Chi and shiatsu massage, the money raised will go to those living in the Tohoku area of the Miyagi Prefecture most affected by the disaster.

The event, which takes place from 10am to 3pm on Saturday at Knox Hall, beside Goggin’s pub in Monkstown, is organised by a small group of Japanese people who are long-term residents in Ireland and who call themselves “Together”.

Speaking about the event, organiser Yoshi Ishii said: “The most important thing to the event and to those who have been suffering so much in Japan is the people who will come to the event and show their support.

“We are fully aware of the difficult situation in this country, but we can tell you that this is the first time that we feel we have to do something about our country’s unbelievable difficulties, asking for the support from the people in this country.”

The event will feature a silent auction for a wedding kimono organisers say can be worn or used as a wall hanging. There will be crafts including obi (the sash used for Japanese dress), dolls, ceramics and a handmade wall hanging made by a weaver who is a regular prize winner for her work. Organisers can be contacted on 01-2821475 and 01-289 8755.
