Funds sought to solve Galway sewage problem

Money is to be sought from the Government to fund a temporary solution to the problem of sewage disposal in Galway city

Money is to be sought from the Government to fund a temporary solution to the problem of sewage disposal in Galway city. Two of the city's beaches are polluted, causing a smell in the Claddagh and city-centre areas at low tide.

Galway Corporation is to seek £885,000 to lay a pipe on the seabed out from the shore which would discharge the sewage into deep water in Galway Bay.

The proposed sewage treatment plant planned for Mutton Island in Galway Bay cannot go ahead until the Supreme Court hears an appeal by Mr Ray McBride against the refusal of the High Court to quash Galway Corporation's decision to proceed to tender on the scheme.
