The funeral of Sergeant Derek Mooney (33), the Army ranger who was killed last week in Liberia, has taken place in Dublin this afternoon.
Sergeant Mooney, from Blackrock, lost his life just a week after arriving in Liberia when the vehicle he was driving went off the road.
The Church of St John the Baptist in Blackrock was filled with mourners and well wishers for the service.
Mr Mooney's coffin was placed on a gun carriage after the mass and brought to Shanganagh Cemetery.
Sergeant Mooney had been in the Irish army for 16 years and had previously served overseas with the UN in Lebanon, East Timor and Honduras.
The men were on a routine familiarisation patrol, when their jeep, which was part of a convoy, left the road south of the capital, Monrovia.
The Irish troops are part of an advance party sent to Liberia to set up a base for the main group of 430 soldiers, who will take up duty in the first few weeks of December.
