The garda killed last Friday during the arrest of four suspected bank raiders has been buried in his home town of Ratoath in Co Meath.

Det Sgt John Eiffe was killed during an operation in Abbeyleix, Co Laois, to catch a gang of known Dublin criminals who allegedly planned to rob a bank in the town.

Garda Commissioner Mr Pat Byrne said after the incident it appeared Det Sgt Eiffe was shot dead by a fellow garda during the capture of the suspects. Another officer and two of the suspects were also injured.

Det Sgt Eiffe was married with four children.

President Mrs Mary McAleese attended Det Sgt Eiffe's funeral, while the Taoiseach, Mr Ahern, was represented by his aide-de-camp, Capt Ger O'Grady.
