The funeral of Michaela Logan, the nine-year-old girl who died in Monday night's single-vehicle crash near Edgeworthstown, Co Longford, took place yesterday in her parish church of St Choca's in Kilcock, Co Kildare.
Michaela died along with her six-year-old friend, Ava Carberry-Varden, when the car in which they were travelling hit an embankment.
The parish priest of Kilcock and Newtown parish, Fr PJ Byrne, described Michaela's life as "precious", saying she had lived her life with love and shared that love "in a special way" with her classmates.
Fr Byrne also paid tribute to the emergency services who attended the scene of the crash.
Michaela was a third-class student at St Choca's National School in Kilcock.
Hundreds of Michaela's classmates joined members of her family, including her mother, Michelle, and the local community in celebrating her short life.
Many classmates clutched single pink and white roses and most were moved to tears as their friend's pink coffin was wheeled to the front of the church where a family portrait, a favourite Dolly Parton album, a school musical instrument - a recorder - and a Bratz doll were placed on it as mementoes of Michaela's life.
In a brief and moving tribute to Michaela, her aunt Stephanie said her niece was "a lovely little girl" filled with fun.
Following the funeral Mass, Michaela's remains were taken to the Logan family grave in St Joseph's Cemetery, Kilcock, for burial.
The removal of Ava Carberry-Varden from St Joseph's Hospital in Longford to St Mel's Cathedral, Longford, took place last night.
Her funeral will take place at noon today followed by burial at Tuam Cemetery.
