THE FUNERAL will take place tomorrow of Co Cavan pensioner Johnny Golden, who died this week from serious injuries sustained in an attack at his home.
Gardaí have issued a renewed appeal to the public for information about the case.
Mr Golden (73) was subjected to a sexual assault and his body was mutilated during an incident at his home in Doogarry near Killeshandra in the early hours of September 7th last.
The pensioner, who was not married and lived alone, was discovered at his home, by neighbours who became concerned for his welfare.
He was taken to Cavan General Hospital where he died on Wednesday night.
Sources familiar with the case described the attack as extremely violent and said a murder inquiry was likely to take place.
A Garda spokesman said the results of a postmortem examination conducted on Mr Golden’s body will not be released for operational reasons.
His body will repose in Cavan Hospital until 1pm tomorrow and the funeral will leave the hospital at 2pm to make its way to the Church of Ireland Killlygar Parish Church for the requiem service and burial afterwards in the local cemetery.
Gardaí are particularly interested in hearing from anyone who may have been in the vicinity of Doogarry between 8pm on Monday, September 6th, and 11am on Tuesday, September 7th.
They are asked to contact Ballyconnell Garda station on 049-9525580, the Garda Confidential telephone line 1800-666111 or any Garda station.
