The funerals of the seven victims of road traffic accidents in Cork last weekend will take place today.
Six people , including twin boys from one family, lost their lives in a two-car collision near Ballinhassig, Co Cork, on Saturday night. Meanwhile, a 70-year-old woman was killed as she crossed the road in the Douglas area, also on Saturday.
Mr Denis McCarthy (65) and his wife Nuala (63) were in a car driven by their nephew, Mr Declan O'Donoghue, in his 30s, which was travelling from Cork to Clonakilty on Saturday. The car collided with an oncoming vehicle driven by Mr Paul O'Donovan (23), Kinsale, Co Cork.
Twin brothers Cian and Gavin O'Sullivan (15) and their 15-year-old friend Conor Coleman, all from Dunderrow, Kinsale, Co Cork, were passengers in the car. The two cars collided at 9.30 p.m. in poor visibility and the six people were pronounced dead at the scene. Mr O'Donoghue survived the collision and is in a stable condition.
Mr and Mrs McCarthy will be buried today after requiem Mass in Clonakilty. The O'Sullivan twins' funeral will take place at noon today in Kinsale and Conor Coleman's burial will be at 2 p.m., also in Kinsale. Mr O'Donovan will be buried after 3.30 p.m. requiem Mass.
The 70-year-old woman who died in the Douglas area while crossing the road on Saturday evening was named as Mrs Josephine O'Brien, Greenhills Court, Douglas. Her funeral will take place in Douglas after 2 p.m. requiem Mass today.
