A post mortem on the body of a woman found dead with face and neck injuries in a laneway in Longford town has shown she did not die from these injuries.

The unidentified woman, believed to be in her 30s, was found on the ground underneath a broken window on Walsh's Lane at the back of S&D Electrical on Kilashee Street.

It was initially suggested she fell to her death after a botched robbery at the shop. The woman was found with severe head and face injuries by a local man out walking his dog at 8.30am yesterday.

However, a Garda spokeswoman said this afternoon that a post mortem showed these injuries were not the cause of her death. She said the results of further toxicology tests were needed before a cause of death was established. Foul play has still not been ruled out.

The woman, believed to be of Eastern European origin, has yet to be identified, but gardaí issued a description saying she was of small build; between five feet, one inch and five feet, five inches in height; with short brown hair. She was wearing a navy "LA Gear" tracksuit top and bottom with pink trim. Gardaí are asking anyone with information to contact them on (043) 50570.

Meanwhile, a man in his 50s was arrested today in connection with the attempted robbery. The man was detained this morning after a search warrant was granted to gardaí yesterday evening to search a property in the town.

Speaking in Longford this afternoon Supt Kevin Donohoe of the Garda Press Office said: "Shortly after being arrested and brought into custody, this man, who is in his 50s, took ill with a medical condition and was removed to hospital.

"He remains there and we don't know when we can resume questioning him about the burglary," he added.

"There is no definitive connection between the burglary and the body, but that may change".
