Met Éireann has warned of further wintry showers for the north and west of the country with hail, sleet and snow expected to fall tonight.
The first snow flurries of the year were reported yesterday at Knock and Belmullet, Co Mayo and parts of Ulster were also covered this morning.
With overnight temperatures dropping to sub-zero, the cold spell is set to continue until at least Thursday.
Tonight will see long clear spells mixed with showers. Frost will develop leading to a risk of icy stretches for tomorrow morning.
Tomorrow will be cold again with some showers before the rain turns heavier later in the day. Wednesday is also expected to be cold and wet with brisk winds and temperatures only reaching highs of 9 degrees.
Thursday is expected to be slightly warmer with temperatures returning to double figures but it will remain wet and windy.
Records produced by Met Éireann earlier this week show that it was the warmest autumn on record in most parts of the east and midlands, with the Phoenix Park experiencing its warmest autumn since records began 150 years ago.
AA Roadwatch has warned motorists to take care as icy conditions especially on secondary routes prevail throughout the country.
