A new all-Irish school which had nowhere to start classes in Limerick has been given corporate hospitality at a famous rugby club in the city.

Gaelscoil An Ráithín started its first school term yesterday with teachers and pupils taking their places in one of the corporate boxes at Garryowen Rugby Club.

The famous rugby club which has "schooled" many of the country's finest players including former Irish captain Keith Wood is now the home of Limerick's fifth gaelscoil.

Probably the smallest city-based primary school in the country, Gaelscoil An Ráithín has just 20 pupils. However, enrolments are still being taken for this year, according to school principal Ms Michele Ní Fhátharta.

"We have 20 pupils which entitles us to employ a second teacher so we are still taking enrolments," said Ms Ní Fhátharta.

"It's a fantastic start for the children as there will be a pupil teacher ratio of 10:1 which gives all our pupils a great starting point," she added.

The classroom at Gaelscoil An Ráithín is located in one of the corporate boxes at Garryowen Rugby Club, which is being leased by the school for the coming year.

"The school is fully sanctioned by the Department of Education and fully funded and we have all the facilities here that the children will need including lots of green space!" explained Ms Ní Fhátharta.

The gaelscoil opened following a long-running campaign by a committee of parents living in the Raheen area. They hope to have their own school building in the future.
