Galway City Hall will remain closed until at least Wednesday following an explosion yesterday which destroyed much of the ground floor of the building.

Four separate investigations are to be conducted into the cause of the explosion, which occurred shortly before 8am.

Bord Gáis said yesterday the city hall was not served by natural gas, and that the explosion was “not natural gas-related”.

It is understood that investigations are focusing on the water heating systems in the building.

About 200 staff are normally based in the building, which houses Galway City Council offices. However, only a handful were there when the incident took place and there were no reports of injuries.

The Galway City Council customer service number of 091 536400 is operating as normal but public counter services will be disrupted over coming days and members of the public are asked not to call in person to city hall.

A limited public counter service for payments, planning and other areas will be available during normal office hours from Monday morning at the city council's Transport & Infrastructure Office beside the Grammar School on College Road.

All other Galway City Council services will continue to operate as normal across the city.

E-mail and web services are currently unavailable but the council can be contacted by phone on 091 536 400 or by fax at 091 894 357.
