A Galway firm is claiming to have a solution to the problem oftraffic congestion in Ireland - which it says would reduce average journey timesby one-third.

EasyFlow, a company based in Roundstone, Connemara, contends that ifall roads in urban areas were one way and designed so that trafficnever crossed but only merged, traffic congestion would besignificantly less.

Under the system, there would be no traffic lights and no roundaboutsthereby removing obstructions and decreasing journey times withoutraising the speed limit.

The company claims to have developed 7000 "integrated patterns, ofwhich one, or a combination of more than one can be selected to suitthe existing roads and streets of any urban area".

The project's brainchild, Mr Paddy Power, says the system also has theadded advantage of being safer as right-hand turns would never crossoncoming traffic.

Mr Power said: "The only thing stopping this system is the endlessinertia of governments and the failure of the designers to thinkahead."

"Because traffic is flowing smoothly without braking and waiting forred traffic lights and accelerating away on the green and ditto onroundabouts the fuel consumption is reduced to one half with theconsequence of a similar reduction of C02 pollution.

"Thus this will more than achieve the Minister’s pollution-reduction objectiveswithout using inflationary green taxes.
