The Minister for Transport, Mr Brennan, has announced that funding of up to €1m will be made available for the construction of two Quality Bus Corridors (QBCs) in Galway.
The two prioritised lanes, which will be developed for the sole use of public transport buses, will run west from Eyre Square to Knocknacarra, and east from Eyre Square to Merlin Park. Work on the bus-lanes is expected to be completed by 2004.
The QBCs in Galway will be the first constructed outside Dublin, where nine of the special routes are currently in operation. Speaking during a day-long visit to Galway today, the Minister said that he planned on doubling the number of QBCs in the capital - but did not provide a time frame for such a project.
He also announced that those commuting on the Galway to Dublin intercity rail line will now save 15 minutes in journey time, due in the main to the recent completion of a €5.18m signalling system.
Whilst in Galway, Minister Brennan also officially opened the €1.5m Millenium Children's Park, along the Cathedral River.
