Galway village chosen as likely 'superdump' site

The village of New Inn, Co Galway is the recommended location for the county's controversial 50-acre landfill site.

The village of New Inn, Co Galway is the recommended location for the county's controversial 50-acre landfill site.

A sub-committee of Galway County Council heard this evening that consultants have chosen the area from a shortlist of three locations.

New Inn, in east Galway, Newbridge in the north and Ballinahistle in the east were under consideration as possible 'superdump' sites. Residents in each area opposed the dump.

Environmental consultants MC O'Sullivan, who have been active in the selection of other controversial landfill projects, including one in north Dublin, made a presentation to councillors this afternoon.

However, a final decision on the dump and its location must yet be approved by the full council.

Ballinasloe councillor Pat O'Sullivan said he did not believe people in New Inn would look favourably upon the selection of the village as the location for the landfill site.

He said that if the project goes ahead, there will almost certainly be three dumps within 10 minutes' drive of each other in the Galway area.
