The victim (54) is in a critical condition in the Royal Victoria Hospital in the city this morning.

Up to four men who broke into his house at Strangford Avenue in the Balmoral area at about 6.30 a.m. yesterday.

The thieves stole the house and car keys and then used the vehicle to ram through the gates of the driveway.

They later entered another house in the street where they attacked an elderly man and his son with a hammer before trying to steal their car.

The son suffered a head injury while his father suffered a minor injury.
