In the first incident, a woman in her nineties was left badly shaken and with a bruise on her face after three men broke into her home on Chichester Avenue off the Antrim Road in north Belfast.

The gang escaped with a small amount of cash.

Elsewhere, a 79-year-old woman in Scarva, Co Down, was held hostage in a room after awaking to find three masked men in her house.

The raiders ransacked her home in the Moody Park area but escaped empty-handed, a PSNI spokeswoman said. The victim was badly shocked but physically unharmed, she said.

There was no indication the two incidents were related.
