Gardaí launched an investigation into his death after suspicious marks were found on his body.

A post mortem examination was carried out by the State pathologist, Dr Marie Cassidy, on April 6th, and although her initial findings proved inconclusive, further tests revealed "certain injuries" which led Garda to investigate.

The family, friends and neighbours of the infant, and staff at both hospitals were questioned.

The detained man was released without charge on Wednesday evening and a file is now being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Ross Murphy was first admitted to Wexford General Hospital on Thursday, March 31st, when he was suffering from a stomach complaint. It is believed that he was vomiting at the time.

It is unclear at this stage whether staff at the hospital noticed some bruising on his body.

He was released four days later on April 3rd, but brought back to the hospital later that same day after his condition worsened.

Doctors there made the decision to transfer him to Our Lady's hospital, and he was transferred there on Monday, April 4th.

His condition worsened further, and he died the next day.
