A garda and a member of the legal profession were in hospital in Limerick last night after gardaí disturbed an aggravated burglary in the county.
Gardaí were called to a house at Rhebogue, Dublin Road, just after 6.30 p.m. They disturbed at least two men who were carrying out the burglary. The weapon used by the men is believed to have been a baseball bat.
When the officers reached the house they found a man, who was tied up, being assaulted. A violent struggle took place during which one garda received facial injuries. He was taken to the Limerick Regional Hospital, where he was being treated last night.
The other injured party, whom gardaí said was a member of the legal profession, was also taken to the hospital for treatment. The man is believed to practise civil law in Limerick.
Two men in their 30s were arrested and taken to Henry Street Garda station. One is from Limerick and the other is from Northern Ireland.
One Garda source said early indications were that the attack was not linked to the ongoing gang feud in Limerick.
The incident follows an arson attack at the home of the Limerick State prosecutor on Sunday, October 12th. Mr John O'Sullivan was not at his home in Farranshone, Limerick, when a petrol can was set alight and thrown into the kitchen of the house.
A native of Kerry, Mr O'Sullivan (45) has been the prosecutor for three years and has lived in the city for 12 years. Gardaí believe the attack on the barrister's home was linked to an attempt a week earlier to burn down Limerick's recently refurbished Circuit Court building.
