The Garda Ombudsman has opened an investigation after a man was killed by a car in Derry this morning.
The man died on the Buncrana Road on the Donegal-Derry border at about 10am when gardaí were reportedly pursuing a vehicle over the behaviour of its driver.
The man who died has been named by the PSNI as Tommy Long (46) of Carne Hill, Derry.
The Garda Ombudsman Commission said the incident has been referred by the Garda Commissioner to the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission under Section 102 of the Garda Síochána Act 2005.
"The fatality involved a car which had crossed the border into Northern Ireland from Co Donegal in an apparent attempt to evade the Garda Síochána who were seeking to speak with the driver in relation to his driving behaviour," the statement added.
"The PSNI are investigating the fatality which occurred in their jurisdiction," the Ombudsman said.
Gardaí have arrested a man in connection with the incident.
Police are seeking witnesses.
