The Garda Siochana police has commissioned the biggest-ever survey into how it is regarded by the public.

The survey will be carried out independently by a Belfast-based research company, who are planning 10,000 telephone and written interviews over the next six weeks.

The Garda Siochana gave an assurance today that the survey would be "completely confidential" and said no one would be associated with the answers they gave.

Ciaran O'Dwyer, head of the force's research unit, added: "The survey is looking for information on three points - the satisfaction with the service they receive, their feelings of safety or otherwise and their views of policing priorities.
