"More progressive and more practical", the new kit will include for the first time customised footwear and a utility belt, both of which the individual gardaí had previously been responsible for supplying.
The new gear includes a pair of tough new safety boots, navy blue trousers, and a two-tone fluorescent water-proof jacket with a detatchable inner fleece. The belts are designed for holding handcuffs and other equipment.
The clothing was revealed today in Dublin and will initially be put on a ten-week trial in the Bridewell area of Dublin and Tullamore in Co Offaly.
The old Garda uniform will be used mainly for ceremonial occasions when it is phased out, according to a Garda spokesman.
