A motorcycle garda was stabbed in the hand and chest last night in Dublin when he intervened in what was described as a domestic dispute.

Gardai said that at around 9 p.m. they received a call that a man was breaking up household goods in the back garden of a house at Lower Beechwood Avenue, Ranelagh. The motorcycle garda, from Donnybrook station, was despatched to speak to him and was stabbed with a knife.

The garda was taken to St. Vincent's Hospital, Elm Park, for treatment where his condition was not found to be life-threatening.

The man, meanwhile, had locked himself in the bathroom of his flat. A trained negotiator was sent from garda headquarters in Harcourt Square to persuade him to give himself up, gardai said. He was arrested just after midnight.
