A Garda investigation is underway into alleged "suspicious activity" involving a motorcycle, just prior to a crash in which the bike's driver was killed this afternoon.
The 35-year-old man was fatally injured when his motorbike collided with a car on the Malahide Road, Coolock, at around 3.45pm, a Garda statement said.
"The scene is currently being examined by the Fatal Traffic Collision Investigation Unit," the statement added.
"The Garda Commissioner has appointed a senior officer to investigate reports of suspicious activity by the motorcycle in the area prior to the collision and the circumstances of the collision itself."
Both the deceased and his pillion passenger were taken to nearby Beaumont Hospital.
The Garda statement said the passenger is currently being treated for leg injuries. The driver of the car was unhurt.
A Garda spokesman confirmed the car involved in the collision was a civilian car and not a Garda vehicle. He said the motorbike was not being pursued by the Garda at the time of the crash, although there was a Garda car in the vicinity.
Witnesses should contact the Garda at Coolock station.
