A senior executive in RTE's Engineering Division has been dismissed following an investigation into the misappropriation of funds, an RTE spokeswoman said yesterday. A sum in the region of £100,000 is believed to be involved.
The spokeswoman confirmed that the man had been dismissed last Friday with complete loss of pension rights. He had been employed by RTE for about 20 years.
When confronted about the missing funds, which are understood to have disappeared over a number of years, it is understood that the man was forthcoming about what had occurred.
The irregularity was uncovered following a routine internal accounting check and the matter is now the subject of a Garda investigation.
A brief statement from RTE last night said: "In the course of a routine internal audit, certain financial irregularities came to light, in consequence of which a member of staff has resigned. Internal inquiries are continuing to determine the precise extent of the problem. The appropriate authorities have been informed by RTE."
