Gardai investigating the brutal rape of an eight-year-old girl in Cork city made a new appeal to the public for help as the National Crimestoppers Trust yesterday began a leaflet campaign for information on the crime.
Supt P.J. Brennan said he believed there was still somebody who could help gardai in their inquiries into the rape of the girl, who was lured by a man from Dillon's Cross to Adelaide Place on April 25th.
"This terrible incident happened in broad daylight at about teatime," Supt Brennan said, and the man took the girl "about 600 metres along a busy city roadway". He said they "would have expected people to be passing through the area at the time and we're convinced somebody out there has some information which will help". Supt Brennan said they were also trying to trace a young man seen drinking in a local pub between 5 and 6 p.m.
"He's described as being 18-20 years, over 6ft tall with a rough appearance though clean shaven. His hair was well groomed and he was wearing blue jeans and a dark, possibly check, shirt which may have writing on it.
"What was peculiar about him was that he was wearing a money pouch or `bum bag' around his waist," said Supt Brennan, adding that they would like the man to contact them so that they can eliminate him from their inquiries.
Meanwhile, the Crimestoppers Trust has offered a £5,000 reward for information which will lead to a conviction and they've targeted some 10,000 addresses on Cork's northside for a leaflet campaign appealing for information.
