Gardaí in Dublin have tonight called off a search for an abandoned baby boy declaring the phone calls made in relation to the incident to be a hoax.

A series of calls made to the gardaí over the last two days sparked an intensive search of more 2,800 addresses in the Ballymun area.

What now appear to have been a series of bogus calls claimed a new born baby boy had been left behind a sofa in an abandoned flat wrapped in a jacket.

The calls were from a female claiming to be the teenage mother whom gardaí said sounded extremely distressed.

Between 30 and 40 gardaí from Ballymun and Santry Garda stations and Dublin City Council officials took part in the search.

Earlier today gardaí believed they had established the teenager's name after renewed contact was made.

But the phone calls which never lasted more than two minutes are now believed to have emanated from outside the Dublin area and are being declared as a hoax.

A garda spokeswoman said tonight: "Gardaí arenow satisfied that several calls that were made in relation to this incident were not genuine."

"Gardai are now following a number of lines of enquiryinto the origin of these calls," she said.
