GARDAÍ INVESTIGATING the suspicious death of a 10-day-old baby boy say a team from the Garda Technical Bureau will continue its forensic examination of the house he was in in the hours before his death today and possibly tomorrow.

The newborn had travelled with his parents from their home in Navan to the house in Scholars Walk in Lusk last Thursday night.

A number of adults and at least two children were in the house and at about midnight the baby was taken by three men and his mother to the Emergency Department of Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda.

Despite efforts by doctors and nursing staff, the baby died around two hours later.

It is understood he had severe head injuries and may have sustained a broken arm.

His parents were extremely upset in the hospital and all the adults who were in the house have been spoken to by gardaí.

Nobody has been arrested. A Garda spokesman confirmed: “we are continuing to treat the death as suspicious and are awaiting the findings of the Garda Technical Bureau.”

The bureau has been examining the house since it was sealed off on Friday morning. The State Pathologist Prof Marie Cassidy carried out the postmortem on the newborn on Friday afternoon.

While it has been alleged that the infant sustained his injuries in an accident, possibly by being dropped, gardaí are satisfied that whatever led to his death occurred in the house in Lusk and are carrying out their investigation sensitively.
