Gardaí are continuing to appeal for witnesses to an attack on a young journalist in Dublin early on Saturday morning.

Maireád O'Dwyer (27) was on her way home to Rialto after a night out when she was set upon and stabbed in the neck.

She underwent major surgery at St James's Hospital on Saturday, and her condition was described as critical. The hospital said it could not comment on her condition yesterday as her family had asked to maintain her privacy.

Ms O'Dwyer, a researcher with Newstalk 106-108FM, is originally from Clonmel, Co Tipperary.

Speaking to the media yesterday, her father, John O'Dwyer, urged anyone who knew the attacker to come forward. It may be some time before his daughter is well enough to speak to gardaí.

A Garda spokeswoman said no arrests had yet been made, and gardaí were continuing to appeal to anyone who may have been in the area about the time of the attack to come forward.

Ms O'Dwyer was attacked in the Ave Marie Road-Lourdes Road area, just yards from her home, at about 3am.

Gardaí have also asked taxi drivers to help as they may have passed Ms O'Dwyer on her way from Harcourt Street to Lourdes Road. She has long, red hair and was wearing a grey skirt and a cream and brown jacket.

Gardaí investigating the attack can be contacted at 01 666 9400.
