Gardaí at Arklow investigating an armed robbery at the Bank of Ireland branch in the town yesterday have arrested four men.
The four were arrested last evening and are being detained under Section 30 of the Offences Against The State Act, 1939 at Arklow, Wicklow and Enniscorthy Garda stations.
Three have Dublin addresses and one has an address in Arklow. They range in ages from mid twenties to late thirties.
All of the arrests took place in Arklow and follow the arrest of eight people last week in Dublin in connection with a series of armed raids that netted over €1 million.
The armed raids on cash transit vans and cash dispensing machines in the past six months are thought to have been carried out by a "professional" criminal gang.
Three women and five men - all in their twenties - were arrested in raids on Thursday and Friday last week. One of the men was charged and released while the rest were released without charge after files were sent to the DPP.
A Garda spokesman said there was "no suggestion" at this stage of any link between the group arrested last week and the four men held in custody over today's armed robbery.
He also said the gardaí were "keeping an open mind" on whether the series of raids over the last six months are connected to drug dealing.
Operation Delivery was established in June to combat the alarming increase in armed raids on cash machines. Last week gardaí warned it is only a matter of time before someone is seriously injured or killed in one of the raids.
