Gardaí in Galway have arrested a man who is suspected of being involved in a rape in the city three months ago.

The man, in his 40s and from the mid-west area, was arrested in Portlaoise, Co Laois, late last week, and driven to Galway for questioning at Mill Street station.

He was questioned by detectives for 12 hours under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, and is said to have been returned to a prison from where he was "unlawfully at large".

A file has been sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions.

The attack last September on a 21-year-old student near Lough Atalia on the city's east side was described by gardaí at the time as extremely violent.

The woman had been approaching the junction of Lough Atalia Road and the Dublin road at about 10.30 p.m. when she took a short cut behind the Huntsman Bar.

She was seized and dragged close to the water's edge, where she was stabbed in the face with a screwdriver and raped.

The woman fought back, and scratched her attacker's face before he ran from the scene.

A Garda reconstruction of the event for RTÉ's Crimecall produced a considerable response from the public.
