Gardaí were last night questioning a man and a woman after a Garda car was rammed near Cahir, Co Tipperary, following a hijacking in which a young woman was threatened at knife-point and forced to drive the couple over five miles in her car.
The incident began in Carrigtwohill in east Cork at about 7.30pm, when a man and a woman in their 20s held up staff in the Centra supermarket in the town at knife-point and stole a bottle of whisky.
The man and woman then jumped into a silver Opel Corsa on the main street and threatened the woman driver at knife-point, forcing her to drive them to Glanmire, where they threw her from the car near the Vienna Woods Hotel and sped off in the direction of Dublin.
It is understood the victim was not seriously injured, but was badly shaken by the ordeal.
She managed to raise the alarm and gardaí in Glanmire and Cobh issued a description of the stolen vehicle.
Gardaí in Cahir, Co Tipperary, stopped the car on the main Cork-Dublin road at around 9pm. Two gardaí were injured and taken to hospital after being hit by the stolen vehicle.
The couple were arrested under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act and were last night being questioned by detectives in Cahir.
