Gardaí investigating a weekend brawl outside a GAA club, which left a man critically injured, have interviewed a large number of people who were at a party in the club on the night.
Kevin Dowling (41), Turin, Mullingar, Co Westmeath, remained critical last night after he was struck several times inside and outside St Loman's GAA club in Mullingar.
Mr Dowling was attending a 21st birthday party in the club on the Delvin Road. He was rushed to Beaumont Hospital, Dublin, shortly after the incident which occurred at about 1.45am.
Some 130 people attended the 21st birthday party, and gardaí have obtained statements from a large number of them.
Gardaí said they were happy with the progress they were making and were following a definite line of inquiry.
The affray, which started inside the GAA club, was resumed outside.
Meanwhile, gardaí were yesterday following "a certain line of inquiry" in their investigation into an assault in Cork city, which has left a 21-year-old man in a critical condition on a life-support machine in hospital.
The man was seriously injured when he and his father - who is in his 50s - were assaulted outside a house in the Kilkieran Close area of Knocknaheeny on Cork's north side at about 2.30am on Sunday morning.
The young man - who is from elsewhere on Cork's north side - received a blow to the back of the head from a blunt instrument when attacked by three or four men, while his father was also set upon and suffered a number of minor wounds.
So far searches have failed to recover the weapon used in the attack.
