Gardaí in Cork have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of a homeless man in Cork following his discovery on the street earlier this week.
The man in his late 30s, originally from Knocknaheeny, was found lying on Rutland St off Douglas St by a passerby at around 9.10pm on Thursday.
He was taken to Cork University Hospital but died there today. Gardaí have requested the services of the State Pathologist office to carry out a postmortem as a precautionary measure.
It's understood that the man was conscious when he was found but later lost consciousness though he had no sign of any injury when he was found and taken to hospital.
Gardaí believe the man - who was living in hostel accommodation - had been drinking in the Rutland St area earlier in the day and they've spoke to some of the people he was with.
They have appealed to anyone who may have seen the man in the Rutland St area between 8.30pm and 9.10pm on Thursday to contact Anglesea St Garda station on 021 - 4522000.
