Gardaí in Co Wexford are carrying out an investigation into allegations of sexual abuse concerning the swimming pool in New Ross.
It is understood that some of the allegations are about incidents alleged to have happened up to 20 years ago.
Supt Tom Saunderson told The Irish Times last night that "gardaí were investigating a number of allegations associated with New Ross swimming pool". He said inquiries were continuing.
The public swimming pool in New Ross has been closed in recent days, although it reopened yesterday.
The investigation has been under way in Co Wexford for the last fortnight or so.
Sources said the investigation began after information was brought to the attention of gardaí recently.
Gardaí have declined to comment on the nature of the allegations under investigation.
Councillor Ingrid O'Brien, chairwoman of New Ross town council, said she was aware a Garda investigation was ongoing. New Ross town council owns the swimming pool.
Ms O'Brien also said she was aware that the pool had been closed in recent days as a result of Garda inquiries. She added that councillors in the town had not been informed by officials of the council about the nature of the allegations.
Town clerk of New Ross Gerard Mackey said last night that he could not comment in relation to the allegations or the Garda investigation at this time.
