Gardaí in Limerick are treating as suspicious the death of a Polish man who died a week after he was injured during a street brawl involving up to 20 foreign nationals.

Mateusz Sabik, (20), who lived at Alphonsus Street in Limerick city, died at the Mid Western Regional Hospital in Limerick on Sunday just over a week after he was injured in the incident.

It took place at around 11.30pm on Ellen Street on Saturday week last. Mr Sabik's injuries were initially understood to be not life-threatening but his condition deteriorated over the weekend and he died.

His family travelled to Limerick from Poland at the weekend and were by his bedside when he died on Sunday.

Supt John Kerin confirmed yesterday that they are treating the Polish man's death as suspicious but said the exact cause of his death was not yet known.

Gardai were re-examining CCTV footage taken from the area in a bid to identify those involved in the incident.

Two men were arrested yesterday in connection with the investigation and they were still being held for questioning last night.

Both men are from Poland and one was being held on suspicion of assault while the other was being questioned in connection with a violent disorder charge.

Its understood Mr Sabik was questioned by gardai after the incident but indicated he did not wish to make a complaint.

Assistant State Pathologist Dr Michael Curtis carried out a post mortem on this body at the Mid Western Regional Hospital yesterday however the results of the examination have not been released yet.
