GARDAÍ ARE issuing a new appeal in Galway today in an attempt to locate a key suspect responsible for the death of a young man in the city almost seven weeks ago.
Supt Tom Curley and Garda colleagues from Galway Garda station in Mill Street will be making the public appeal for information on the death of Kieran Cunningham (20) in conjunction with Crimestoppers, the national confidential crime reporting service.
Mr Cunningham, a supermarket employee from Slieve Finn, Corrandulla, Co Galway, was stabbed to death in the early hours of June 3rd in the city centre, shortly after leaving a nightclub alone. At the time of the attack, gardaí issued a CCTV image of a man who they were keen to talk to.
Forensic officers searched a number of premises in Galway, including a house in Renmore where the suspect was believed to have been staying.
The man and a female partner were captured on CCTV footage in the area of the Karma nightclub, off Williamsgate Street, on the night in question.
The woman was arrested for questioning shortly after the stabbing and subsequently was released.
The man who gardaí still wish to talk to is believed to be from Poland, and is described as 6ft tall, with dark, tightly-cut hair, and in his mid-20s.
Mr Cunningham had been in the nightclub with several friends, and investigating officers believe he was the victim of a random knife attack.
Mr Cunningham’s uncle will join Crimestoppers and gardaí at the scene of the stabbing in the Shop Street/Williamsgate Street area.
They will hand out leaflets published in English, Polish and Lithuanian this afternoon from 1pm to 3pm, and also from 11pm tonight to 2am tomorrow, to ensure that clubbers and other people socialising in the area are well informed about the appeal.
