Gardaí in Galway have started an investigation into the events leading to the death of a 15-year-old boy in a road traffic accident in the city at the weekend.
Barry Murphy of Ballinfoile was on his way home from a teenage disco in the Black Box on the Headford Road on Friday night when he was struck by a car.
The driver immediately reported the incident, according to a Garda spokesman.
Reports that the teenager may have been assaulted earlier that night are being taken into account as gardaí try to piece together his movements leading to the accident on the Dyke Road at about 10.30pm.
Gardaí are seeking witnesses to help them with their inquiries. A number of people who saw the boy walking near the waterworks on the Dyke Road have already come forward.
Barry, a fifth-year student at Calasanctius College in Oranmore, was seen leaving the Black Box car park after attending the event, organised by students from two city secondary schools. It was attended by 700 young people.
One of five children, Barry was a member of Eire Óg Gaelic football team and played with Foyle Hibs under-16 soccer team. Team-mates from both clubs formed a guard of honour at his removal from the Mervue Funeral Home to Ballinfoile's Church of the Resurrection yesterday.
Results of a post-mortem carried out out on Saturday are not known yet, but it is understood that he died as a result of being in collision with a moving vehicle.
The scene of the accident was turned into a mini-shrine this week as mourners left flowers, predominantly spring daffodils, by the roadside.
