The Gardaí are today piloting a new fixed charge processing system for traffic offences in a number of locations in Dublin and the Louth/Meath division.
Gardaí from Terenure, Santry, Blanchardstown and Dublin Castle Traffic Department, as well as officers from Drogheda, Dunleer and Kells, will be involved in the pilot.
The new procedures will apply to motorists stopped in any of these areas for speeding or seat belt offences, which carry fixed penalties.
Motorists will not be issued with a notice on the sport, rather the garda will inform them of the alleged offence and will record their details into a hand-held computer or onto a specially designed notepad.
They will receive details by post of the exact offence, the fine and how to pay it.
It is hoped the new computer system will be extended to all areas of Dublin in September. It will be country-wide by the end of the year, when 50 offences will carry fixed charges and will be dealt with in a similar manner.
