A man who escaped from Garda custody at Dublin airport was found in the city centre hours after his escape.

The 21-year-old Georgian was located following a daring escape attempt early yesterday.

The man was being escorted by gardaí on to a flight bound for Frankfurt at about 6.30am yesterday when he fled across the runway.

The airfield was closed and no flights were allowed to take off or land for a period of 30 minutes as a search was carried out by gardaí and airport police. The airfield was reopened when the man was unable to be found within the Dublin airport perimeter.

He was located by gardaí in Dublin city centre yesterday afternoon and he was being kept in Garda custody last night.

A Garda spokesman confirmed that arrangements are being made for the man to be flown out of the country on another flight to Germany.

It is believed that the man had arrived on a flight from Germany within the past two days and was being returned there when he managed to escape.

A spokeswoman for Dublin airport said the airfield was closed from between 6.30am and 7am in the interests of safety, as well as to allow gardaí to search for the man.

"The detainee escaped on to the airfield and it was closed because you cannot have unauthorised personnel on the loose," she said. "It's very dangerous."

She said that some flights suffered small delays as a result of the incident but that schedules were expected to catch up and return to normal during the day.

There was a calm atmosphere at the airport following the incident, which caused apparently little or no disruption.
