Gardai seize cannabis worth €2.7m in Dublin

Gardaí have seized cannabis with a street value of €2.7 million in north County Dublin.

Gardaí have seized cannabis with a street value of €2.7 million in north County Dublin.

The drugs were seized after a planned search of a container in Garristown. The operation at lunchtime involved detectives from the Garda National Drugs Unit and local officers.

One man in his 40s was arrested during the search and his being held in Ashbourne Garda station in Co Meath. Under Section 2 of the Drugs Trafficking Act, he can be detained without charge for seven days.

Gardaí in Co Offaly, meanwhile, seized smuggled cigarettes with an estimated value of over €1 million in an operation last night. A substantial amount of stolen property was also seized.

Seven men aged between 20 and 50 were arrested during a series of raids on homes and a warehouse.

Five were freed, but two people are being held at Tullamore Garda Station for questioning.

The two millions cigarettes were found hidden in a lorry carrying steel girders.

The searches were carried out as part of a major investigation into an international cocaine trafficking network in Cos Offaly and Laois.

The load was taken to Tullamore Garda Station where further searches for drugs and contraband were being carried out.
