Extra gardaí will be on duty over the bank holiday weekend in an effort to combat drink driving and excessive speed.

Four people were killed over the August bank holiday last year and there were 384 arrests for drink driving.

Speed is the single greatest contributory factor to road deaths with alcohol coming a close second. Drivers are being urged to drive within the speed limit, to nominate a non-drinking driver to bring them home or to use public transport or taxis

165 people have been killed on Irish roads so far this year.

Meanwhile, Don't Forget the Morning Afteris the message from www.drinkaware.ie in advance of the bank holiday weekend.

Drinkaware.ie is a web site developed by Mature Enjoyment of Alcohol in Society (MEAS), a drinks industry organisation, to promote sensible drinking habits.

MEAS Chief Executive Fionnuala Sheehan urged people to be aware of the dangers of driving the morning after consuming alcohol.

"We have found that many people are unaware of what is a standard drink and the period of time it takes our bodies to eliminate it. There are lots of myths out  there about cures and soakage strategies."

"The only cure is time and it takes on average one hour to get rid of one standard drink. It is really important for motorists to be aware of this, especially the morning  after a night out".
