Gardaí today warrned motorists in Dublin they would be setting up drink-driving checkpoints across the city and focusing on speeding this bank holiday weekend.
Speaking at Dublin Castle today to announce Garda plans, Chief Supt Aidan Reid said there would be particular emphasis on speeding in the 50km zones, which Garda analysis had identified as the areas where vulnerable road users are most at risk.
He said gardaí would also be targting the enforcement of drink-driving legislation and wearing of seatbelts, particularly by back seat passengers.
Noting there had been 10 deaths in the Dublin region so far this year, Chief Supt Reid appealed to motorists to slow down in areas with high numbers of pedestrians, such as housing estates and shopping centres.
"At this time of the year with good weather and long evenings more people are using bicycles, and we ask that motorists be aware of the increased number of cyclists on our roads. Cyclists should also be aware of their obligation to obey the rules of the road," he said.
Motorcyclists were also advised to check their bikes and lighting were in good order.
In conjuntion with the National Roads Authority and Dublin City Council, safety messages will be displayed on signs on all arterial routes and also in the city centre.
