Gardaí seeking to identify a man, whose body was found on a busy street in Dublin city centre last week, have contacted organisations working with the homeless to find out if he was known to them.
The dead man, who is thought to be Irish and in his 40s, was found lying on the street at Camden Place last Thursday evening. It is understood he died of heart failure, and gardaí do not suspect foul play.
Emergency services were alerted at about 5.30pm, at a time when the area was busy with shoppers and workers passing along nearby Camden Street. Described as being between 1.75 and 1.77 metres in height with short grey hair, the man was pronounced dead on arrival at St James's Hospital.
He was wearing a green jacket, navy tracksuit bottoms and white runners at the time of his death.
Officers have carried out door-to-door inquiries in the area, but so far their search has yielded few clues.
A Garda spokeswoman said that while "nothing is being assumed", gardaí are pursuing the possibility that the man was homeless.
"It's certainly an avenue that we would be checking, particularly because there are a large number of hostels in that district," the spokeswoman said.
None of the homeless agencies has so far been able to identify the body, however.
Gardaí based at Kevin Street, in the capital's south inner city, have appealed for the public's assistance.
