Garden Work

Studies have shown that birds fare better if they are fed throughout the year, so continue to feed them now. But, do not supply whole, loose peanuts until next autumn as nestlings and young birds can choke on them. Serve peanuts in meshenclosed feeders or provide them grated (although time-pressed gardeners will, no doubt, find that life is too short to grate a peanut).

Bird-conscious - or lazy - gardeners who have not cut down the seed-heads of perennial plants should do so now, as new growth is coming up fast. After tidying up, feed plants by working some bonemeal into the top few inches of the soil and by mulching around them with well-rotted manure. If the soil is dry, be sure to moisten it well first. Garden compost will do instead of manure, but can be full of weed seeds.
