The High Court has further adjourned to early July the United States’s application to extradite the former Workers Party president Sean Garland over his alleged involvement in a large scale operation to make high quality counterfeit US dollars.
The American authorities claim Mr Garland (74), Beldonstown, Brownstown, Navan, Co Meath, conspired with others outside the United States as part of a counterfeiting operation involving almost perfect copies of US dollars. It is also alleged the counterfeiting involved the government of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea - North Korea.
Today, Richard Humphreys, for Mr Garland, said a lot of effort had already been made by Mr Garland’s legal team but more time was required before the case could be ready for hearing.
Counsel said they required additional time to deal with US-based lawyers and they also wished to engage with an expert in US-North Korean affairs. Patrick McGrath, for the State, said it had no objection to a further adjournment.
Mr Justice Michael Peart said he accepted every effort has being made to progress the matter and agreed to list the case for July 1st. He remanded Mr Garland on continuing bail to that date.
